Evironment protection 2011

Editors: Lauri Klein and Ingrid Hermet
Year of publication: 2012
Number of pages: 126

Estonian Nature Conservation in 2011 is the English-language version of the book Eesti looduse kaitse aastal 2011.

The book Estonian Nature Conservation in 2011 is a sequel to the Estonian Nature Conservation in 2007 published four years ago. This book focuses on the changes in nature conservation, but also treats the statistical indicators of the current state of nature conservation. While the previous book began with a historical overview, the sequel starts with pointing out the strategical directions and objectives. It follows with a description of protected objects and the organisation of their protection, the spread of species and habitats and their protection. The book has increased in volume by one third in comparison with the previous issue.

Estonian Environmental Review 2013 is the English-language version of the book Keskkonnaülevaade 2013, and gives an overview of the Estonian environmental condition, focusing on the years 2009–2012. The English-language version is available digitally.

Estonian Environmental Indicators 2012 is an English-language version of the publication Eesti Keskkonnanäitajad 2012, and gives an overview of the Estonian environmental status on the basis of environmental indicators. In addition to status indicators, this issue puts more emphasis on the indicators that affect the environmental condition.
The book is divided into 11 chapters – background indicators, mineral resources, fisheries, game animals, water, forest, biodiversity, air and climate, waste, environment and health, and funding. Most of the themes include individually or jointly three types of indicators: indicators of pressure, status and measures. The type has been specified for each indicator; most indicators also include the most significant associated environmental or background indicators.

This issue based on environmental indicators is designated for anyone interested in the environmental status of Estonia. The book offers a strategic objective, timeline and short analysis for each main environmental topic on the basis of the newest information available during the first half of 2012.

Estonian Environmental Review 2009 is an English-language version of the book Keskkonnaülevaade 2009, and gives an overview of the Estonian environmental condition by focusing on the years 2003–2007. The size of population decreased during the consumption and building boom, but the anthropogenic pressure on environment rather increased, especially during 2007.

The environmental review starts with a short overview of the Estonian population and economy. This is followed by an overview of the principal environmental areas: use of natural resources, water and air quality, biological diversity, soil, land use, climate change, but also waste, environmental taxes and charges, and environmental management systems. This issue also contains a separate chapter on the environment and health.

The Environmental Review 2009 has similar structure with the previous issue from 2005 with the purpose of ensuring comparability. The timelines of this issue go back to 2007, some to 2008. The review therefore shows, if and how Estonia has managed to fulfil the often relatively high environmental objectives set forth by EU directives during the years of economic success.
